When the explorer Hiram Bingham first arrived here in 1911, he was searching for the Lost City of Vilcabamba, a hidden capital where the Inca took refuge during the Spanish Conquest. Because of Bingham’s strong belief that it was Vilacabama, Machu Picchu became known as “The Lost City”. The theory was proved wrong after his death. Many researches think that it was never forgotten.
The excellent Museo de Sitio Manuel Chi?vez Balli?n tells a lot about the history of Machu Picchu, how and why it was built. The first and the most important task however is to find the museum. It’s inconveniently hidden at the end of a long road near the base of ruins, about a 30-minute walk from the town of Aguas Calientes.
I was a little bemused having just fine-tuned this fun event. Yet at the same time, I was in a place of sweet surrender, and openness to new possibilities.

The book was made into a very bad movie directed by Roland Emmerich, who later became more famous for Independence Day and Star Gate. It would very much be a better project in the hands of, say, Terry Gilliam.
